About the Collection

The Collection: Aesthetic Consciousness

This art was created in my apartment and rooftop in Alphabet City during quarantine 2020. I used a variety of methods and apparatus, everything from spinning pours via 3D printed device hanging from yoga strap from a TV antenna, to acrylic on canvas.

Using vibrant colors ("Aesthetics") and subtle messages to portray abstract ideas and inspiration, the collection is intended to evoke a visceral feeling in the viewer, inviting them to experience not only the art, but also the world around us, more vividly and with more intense presence + awareness ("Consciousness"). In other words, pretty colors in art making us more aware of pretty colors that exist everywhere.

Each painting tells a story about what I'm going through and feeling about the world: Concerns about the future lined with hope and silver.... linings. Intense and wavering emotions. Motivation to cease this unique opportunity, make a mission out of it, and ultimately look back on this time and remember it as our Finest Hour.

I hope my art will resonate and inspire you.

What's Kalingo?

When I was traveling through Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls, I started chatting with my taxi driver, also named Jeff. He explained that while Jeff was his English name, his real name was Kalingo, which meant "the creator." Jeff the Creator. It stuck with me and now my real estate company is called Kalingo LLC and Kalingo remains my inspiration to build and create.

Who am I?

I'm Jeff, and if you're here you probably know me. So while this section probably isn't necessary, and writing about myself feels pretty weird, I'll share a little of my story for the sake of embracing discomfort.

My original interest in art starting in 8th grade, where I was graffiti artist tagging up the suburbs of Davie Florida under the alias Menace 😂🤫. A few friends were sleeping over and we snuck out around midnight by climbing out my 2nd story window and jumping down from the roof. Except one friend was too scared so he just walked out the front door. We surreptitiously wandered the neighborhood and scouting walls to tag. At one point we heard a siren, so we all bolted into a backyard and trudged through a small river (totally unnecessary) to avoid the sirens, which ended up going elsewhere. That's when I decided to take a hiatus from street art and lay low for a while.

Fast forward to 2020. The lockdown started in NYC, and I was feeling pretty bummed. In what felt like an instant but in slow motion, everything shut down: the endless amount of NY events and activities were no more, my gym was closed, and we couldn't leave the house. Being relatively new to NY and without much to do given #stayhome, I became pretty bored?/lonely? I was, like many of us, pretty melancholy. Then after the 3rd digital fucking dance party that was hosted that week, I got on a zoom w bro-cuz. He had been running around dodging the virus since he was forced out of China in January. He gave me a motivating Churchill-esq speech about how one day we will look back on this as our Finest Hour and we need to make the best of it. I was inspired and decided to stick around NYC, isolated, and focus on calisthenics, meditation, reading and art. I came across this quote which resonated:

Without great solitude, no serious work is possible.”

― Picasso

Though my graffiti days are over (or are they?), I'm continuing to create art that is more meaningful, intentional and legal. I use art to express my thoughts and ideas, and prefer to use non-traditional methods to get the paint on canvas. In other words, I'm not very technically sound when it comes to painting, but I'm full of what I think are interesting concepts.

Otherwise I'm an aspiring monkey ninja dude hanging onto this rock floating through space doing my best to enjoy life while making the world a better place. I spend most of my time these days practicing gymnastics-based body movements and skills, like handstands, mobility, acro and calisthenics.

I also love basketball, reading/learning how to be better each day while living up to my values, and trying to live a healthy lifestyle.
